New Season News - 08 March 2017

Another week has flown by. We are now officially in autumn but the weather is still warm. Or at least it was until today!

We have a mere 4 more weeks until daylight saving ends. That means only 4 more Thursday night 10k runs.

Tomorrow the Auckland Art Festival is holding Power Plant in the Lovers Lane area. This may not affect our Thursday run but parking may be tight as there will be some close closures.

Stay tuned for any updates on Thursday. We will send an email out if the run cannot take place.

We will keep to our new course of 4 x 2.5 km laps until the end of the season. I welcome your feedback so please email me after the run tomorrow and let me know your thoughts on the new course. Should we keep it or revert to our 3 x 3.33 km laps?

The numbers were slightly down last week as most people were in rest-up mode before some big events last weekend - Ironman and New Plymouth marathon.

Joshua Elliott came to test us out to see if he can run comfortably for Round The Bays.

IronMike was doing his 11th Ironman in Taupo. The conditions leading up to the event were glorious, but overnight it all turned to custard. On race day the conditions were very challenging - big winds and choppy water.

Something like 70 people didn't make the swim cutoff but IronMike managed to complete his 11th Ironman with about 3 minutes to spare before final cutoff. Well done IronMike - you are an inspiration and a Legend.

Three more legends worth mentioning are our regular 10k participants Andy Harper, Gene Rand and Katrin Gottschalk.

Gene was the overall winner of New Plymouth marathon, Katrin was 3rd female home, and Andy was a placegetter in his age group. The YMCA Marathon Club were well represented and other Y members got placings in their age group category too.

We are right in the middle of the Rotorua build-up. One of our newer members Craig Andrew is training well. I heard him mention last week that he cracked a PB at the 10k - good on you Craig. I hope you continue to train with us and run well.

little bit of background on our weekly 10K series...

We are not one of those organisations that run their event like a business model, have major commercial backing or charge a hefty entry fee. The YMCA Marathon Club is community minded and the 10K series is run voluntarily by club members, with very modest support from our kind sponsors, and we try to keep the cost down so it is within everyone's budget.

The event is called the "10K series" rather than the "10 km series" because 10K Sportswear is our major sponsor. It is, however, a measured course of exactly 10 km distance.

Until Thursday... keep fit, keep running, keep safe, keep smiling and all will be well!

I'm really enjoying the 10km series... Just wanted to send a note to say what a great job you guys do, and love the 'relaxed' atmosphere.
