New Season News - 01 November 2018

There has been plenty of action in the Auckland Domain this week. That's okay. We can still run our 5 & 10K Summer Series on Thursday evening, from the Grandstand off Park Rd. Volunteers from the Auckland YMCA Marathon Club ensure the event goes ahead every Thursday, come rain, hail or bright sunshine. Walkers start at 5.30 and runners at 6 pm.

Register with the time keepers before the race start. You don't need to be a member of our running club, to participate.  Visitors are most welcome to share the walking and running experience, with other like minded people.  Entry is by way of a $5 contribution, and that puts you in the draw for one of our fabulous  Spot Prizes at 7 pm. Just ask our friendly volunteers about the course or anything else you are not sure of.

There was excitement and anticipation around the Auckland Museum on Tuesday evening. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan were guests of honour at the Prime Minister's reception. The general public were lucky to see the royal couple on their way into the museum, but it really was too dark later, when they were leaving. The Police and Security Guards looked like they had the whole area covered, but they didn't seem to mind, the odd dedicated runner, trying to stay on course, and not get to distracted by the celebrities and their security team :-)

Other notable events and achievements this week included the good number of regular 10K runners, who stepped up to either the half or full   Auckland Marathon    Andy HarperColleen Falloon and Terry Thompson all won their respective age group in the marathon and Ciaran Faherty, the fleet footed Irishman was fourth overall. Tracy Hill and Yoko Mira were second in their age group and Conrad Langridge and Ed Spurdle finished with a PB performance. Congratulations on a wonderful achievement to everyone that finished their event on the day. The 10K Summer Series is pleased to feature as part of your training plan. A special mention to Malcolm Gray, completing his 300th marathon, Rebecca Edgecombe, her 100th and to Sue Meltzer for completing her 50th marathon. They and others, continue to show many of us, that anything is possible.

Now to the running news. Week 4 of the series saw  Chris Robb finishing first in the 10km run and Anna Scarth was the first women. Lyndon Hohaiawas the first walker to finish.
Alex Morreau was first in the 5km run and the first women was  Zara Pomfret. The  first walker  to finish,  was  Sarah Edmonds. Keep up with all the Webscorer results and Leaderboard.  Click here for webscorer results: www.webscorer.com

Another interesting achievement popped up this week for a regular 10K runner.  Auckland Sea Kayaks  owner, operator and guide, Nic Mead paddled to Rangitoto Island for his 500th time. He guides guests on an enjoyable and highly recommended experience of the popular  Sunset tour to Rangitoto island. This might be the [unofficial] world record for kayaking across this stretch of water. This is Auckland's must do water activity.

There is a slight tweak to our course, while the Parnell Accessway to the Museum is improved. Continue along Titoki St until reaching the bollards opposite the Kaplan International building. A tough course but the rewards are real.  Check out the course here  Series Course  Please be aware that there are no road closures, and participants should give way to traffic, and be courteous to other footpath users. Beware of the low overhanging branches on the trees and remember the footpath can be uneven in places.

I'm really enjoying the 10km series... Just wanted to send a note to say what a great job you guys do, and love the 'relaxed' atmosphere.
