Club News & Events 06 July 2018

Take your marks!

It's all on this weekend. Saturday the North Island Cross Country Champs in Taupo, and then the Club 10K Road Champs on Sunday July 8, in the Auckland Domain. To add to the excitement of our 10K Champs, we have invited some other clubs along for some friendly competition. Walkers need to be at registration below the Winter Gardens by 7.45, ready for a 8am start. Runners meet at the Grey's Ave 'Y' at 8am before warming up, with a run to the Winter Gardens. Hopefully we can start the runners by 8.20am. The traditional course starts by the Winter Gardens, down to Domain Drive, and out to Parnell Rd. Back up Maunsell Rd, past the front of the museum then down around Football Rd, and up the Carlton Gore hill (3 times). The first 2 laps go down past the duck ponds and back up The Crescent, past the finish area. On the last lap we turn into The Crescent off hospital hill, for a fast finish. We are looking for a volunteer to help with the Webscorer timing system.

A reminder for your results to count in the club Championships event, you need to be a current financial member, and wearing a club uniform. After the walk or run, we all return to Grey's Ave YMCA for a morning tea thanks to a bequest to the club from the late Terry Smith.

3 Peaks. Namely, Mt Eden, One Tree Hill (+Mt St John) and Mt Hobson are part of week 1 of our  www.auckland marathon build-up on Sunday July 22. Start times for everyone in the early weeks remains at 8am from the Grey's Ave Club. Each week's Sunday course can be viewed from the club website programs page. www.Map My  You will note the shorter distances for those doing the 1/2 marathon build up  www.Map My or the shorter version  www.Map My

There will be training schedules available on the website, or pick up the appropriate hard copy from the front desk. We would like all Pack Leaders to arrive by 7.45 for a meeting on the first week of the build up. Rumour has it, that ex President and current Club Life Member, Joe Hall, will be along to remind us of the 7 Commandments for our club, before we set off on the build-up.

Well done to everyone who supported the Muriwai Surf Club Challenge and fundraiser. There was a great turn-out and the weather was kind. The lake level was super high, but some how everyone returned to the club without too many mishaps, and the YMCA retained the Des Vercoe Trophy. Club veteran, Terry Thompson stepped outside his comfort zone and completed the challenge for the first time. Thanks again to Isla Nixon for organising the various consents, and ensuring our runners and walkers had their results recorded and Colleen Falloon for her input.

Guess what. Barbara Scarfe and Sue Meltzer recently returned from a very wet, cold and miserable Boston-marathon/results/2018 Have a look at the Wyse Running magazine, where there is an excellent article about their experience. Well, this month they and others, went to the  http://www.Wellington Marathon Would you believe the weather was bad. Wet, cold and miserable, and windy to go with that. Some people got hypothermia. A tough day's adventure, but looks like all our club members finished. Here's hoping, Barbara and Sue haven't entered  Taupo Marathon :-)

Popular mid week runs include Tuesdays Also on Tuesdays, there is a group that meets at the base of Mt Eden for some hill repeats.  Wednesdays there is a group leaving from the North Shore Squash Club, and Thursdays a group does a temp run form the Mechanics Bay car park. For details, refer to facebook./Auckland-YMCA-Marathon-Club-NZ

On Saturdays there is  Park Run around different locations around the city, and seem very popular at the moment. Often we have groups meeting at Titirangi Village for a run through parts of the Waitakere hills. Ask around in your Sunday Packs, about what others are doing mid week.

Week 2 of the Auckland build-up  www.Map My The half marathoners  www.Map My  Applications for the www.auckland marathon Ambassadors close Friday July 6. It is for people passionate about running, health and fitness, and keen to share their journey. If you haven't got your entry in yet, enter as part of our The Auckland YMCA Marathon Club team. There is a group discount code/coupon available from the Club  facebook./Auckland-YMCA-Marathon-Club-NZ page, or ask at the club.
